New Build, Preston

Longridge, Whinney Brow, Preston

Existing situation and objectives

This was a new-build project, so a number of key objectives needed to be taken into consideration. The client wanted to incorporate a suitable renewable energy system into the property to ensure that the carbon emissions would remain at a low level for years to come – both for financial and environmental reasons.

Process

We worked closely with the client and the builder throughout the installation to make sure the system was fully optimised for the new build. Firstly we carried out the necessary primary investigations, including a Heat Loss Calculation and an air pressure test before conducting a British Geological Survey to determine the accurate depth of the boreholes needed based on the kW/ running hours the system has to run. The resulting solution was a 17kW NIBE Ground Source heat pump with 3x135m boreholes and a 500 litre DHW cylinder 350 litre buffer tank. We also commissioned a Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery (MHVR) system to ensure clean, dry air flow throughout the home. The work was completed in 3 weeks.

Outcome and benefits

Now the client will never have to use fossil burning fuels such as oil or propane gas. They received a return from the RHI over 7 years plus also made savings of over £850 annually against oil. Overall the installation has resulted in a very efficient new-build with a substantial Co2 reduction of over 3 tonnes of carbon per year.
